“These two parts work together,” October said, pointing at the still hovering Venn diagram. “The agent is like a lock, the catalyst a key. Six of you had keys but only two of you had locks and got ill.”

Tully paced up and down. “There must be something we both consumed that the others didn’t.”

“You’re the clue,” October said. “Martha had been here for ages. So had everyone else.”

“And I hadn’t.” Tully stopped walking. “I must have been exposed after arrival.”

“So we need to focus on your movements in New Carthage.” Now she paced up and down, following his path, while he watched her. “You were here for a day before the drinks party. Let’s start with what you consumed when you were together.”

Tully nodded. “We have the footage from the apartment.”

“You gave me permission to access the day of the party,” October said, “but we need the day before too.”

He thought back to their arrival the evening before the dinner party, after Solomon’s speech. Tully had pressed Martha to help with his story. There’d been nothing particularly bad there, but she’d still overhear it, and he didn’t love sharing what he was working on with strangers. Even partners.

“Okay,” he said.

She nodded. “But we also need to figure out how the vodka was poisoned.”

“I’m on it,” he told her.
